Vertical casting represents a good alternative to ingot casting for higher production ranging up to 1,000,000 t/y. It aims as well on high product quality, which is easier to control, as non-metallic inclusions automatically drift upwards and unbending stresses are omitted.
In semi-continuous casting, section sizes start typically at a diameter of 400mm (~1 t/m strand weight) and reach up to ~1400mm (12 t/m strand weight) and or more. Round, square and rectangular sections can be cast with this approach. The driving idea behind the vertical casting concept is the requirement to increase the yield whilst maintaining an excellent product quality. The process stays continuous and comprises the conventional mold and oscillation table and in-line cutting of the blooms.
