2. Electromagnetic Stirrer

Electromagnetic Stirrer (EMS) are almost standard for any billet or bloom caster, whether for rebar or for SBQ steel grades.

SMS Concast optimal EMS solutions are applied to improve the quality of the cast strand, either inner quality like porosity or segregation or / and subsurface quality. This is achieved by inducing a rotating electromagnetic field that produces a rotating of the liquid steel.

Based on SMS Concast's vast field experience and metallurgical know-how the complete stirrer technology including coil design, frequency drive software, cooling system and stirrer control system is developed and tailor-made.



The characteristics are:

  • More than 400 coils world-wide in operation ( from 100 mm square or round up to 370 x 600 mm )
  • Current from 400 to 800 Ampere
  • Frequency from 0.5 to 20 Hz
