The vacuum degassing (VD) of SMS Concast reduces the sulfur, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen content in the melt. The result is pure steel. The attainable values of the reduction of sulfur are 10 - 30 ppm, for hydrogen 0.8 – 1.5 ppm, for nitrogen 40 – 50 ppm and for oxygen 8 – 12 ppm.
Vacuum oxygen decarburisation (VOD) on stainless steel will be carried out by a combination of oxygen blowing through a top lance at reduced pressure and auto-decarburisation by use of the remaining dissolved oxygen.
The vacuum system consists of either fixed or movable tanks. An oxygen lance as well as vacuum-bulk tanks are installed for VD-OB or VOD processes. The suction line is equipped with heat exchanger (VOD) and vacuum bag filter. The vacuum is generated by mechanical means or steam-jet pumps.
