2. Ladle Furnace

The ladle furnace (LF) of SMS Concast enables precise control of chemical composition and temperature of the liquid steel and slag. Thereby they fulfill an important basic requirement for additional process steps and also take over a buffer function for the melt in further processing stations.

The ladle furnace of SMS Concast can be constructed as single or double pan stations, as well as in a tower or carousel arrangement. They produce a high heating rate while minimising energy and electrode consumption.

The water-cooled hood of the ladle furnace is designed to minimise the intake air flow into the pan and the oxidation of the electrode's exterior. The construction of the electrode support columns and arms could be configured as a busbar or a conductive track. The system of the secondary electrical circuit is designed to minimise the resistance-asymmetry and optimise the reactance. The hydraulic system allows electrode movements at high speed and is equipped with an emergency backup system.

The main characteristics are:

  • Heating rate of 5-7 K/min
  • Electric energy consumption of 0.35-0.45 kWh/t,K
  • Electrode consumption of 0.008-0.010 kg graphite/kWh
